Recent observations from analysts, including our own Platts colleagues, indicate that the eastern activity is being heavily focused on DUC rundown at the expense of new drilling in those plays.  The August downturn in large-horsepower rigs is consistent with the general environment and the slight focus shift. As a consequence of this shift, Appalachia’s largest rig class (Class D, 1,500-1999 hp) saw marketed utilization crater by 10 percentage points in August while suffering the steepest fall in average day rate for any rig class nationwide.
